The Prevalence or Amblyopla In the Chlldren Less than 10 Years Old at South East Province or Tehran in 1994

Abstract:
Summary Aim : The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of amblyopia in 1310 children less than 10 years old at south east province of Tehran in 1994. Method : Diagnosis of amblyopia is based on linear snellen best corrected vision of 8/10 or less and or difference of 2 lines between eyes in children over 3 years old and behavioral difference when one eye is covered as compared to the other in children less than 3 years old. Results : The prevalences of 6.6% and 3% with best corrected visions of less than 8/10 and 5/10 were observed respectively, amblyopia was associated with some factors : anisometropia (27% ), anisometropia and deviation (8% ), isoametropia ( 42% ), isoametropia and deviation (6% ), deprivation (5%) and idiopathic (12% ). Conclusion : Because of high prevalence of amblyopia and refractive errors, vision screening of young' children at home with standard vision cards is the best way to find amblyopia at earlier and sensitive period for treatment.
